In 1982, Gray traveled to India, Indonesia, and Japan under the auspices of the United States Information Agency on a lecture tour with his wife. Before leaving Japan, the Grays stayed in Kyoto, Japan’s religious capital, and Cleve Gray studied the city’s Zen gardens. The Kyoto gardens directly inspired the Zen Gardens series of 1982 and 1983.
