In his direct carvings, one of the preferred stones William Zorach often utilized was pink Tennessee marble. There are unique qualities to this particular carving, The Dream from 1949. The soft and beautiful elegance of the reclining figure, contrasts with the rough-hewn base. Zorach gave particular attention to the modeling of the full surround base. He signed the work twice and even possibly a third time underneath where his full name and his typical underline of the signature is evident in remnants of red crayon. The two carved in signatures to the base are unique to the artist, his last name distinctly underlined each. The sculpture also bears the original Zabriskie Gallery label cataloging the artwork.
